First LVMPD officer-involved shooting of 2024
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas Metropolitan police shot and killed a suspect early Tuesday morning east of Las Vegas Boulevard.
According to Metro Capt. Joshua Martinez, the shooting occurred on Sherwood Street near Sahara Avenue around 1:47 a.m. after officers on a routine patrol in the area saw a “suspicious” vehicle crash into a parked car.
When the driver got out of the vehicle to look at the damage, the officer approached him but the driver ran away.
“The officer gave chase on foot and while chasing the individual, at this time, he pointed a firearm at the officer. The officer continued to give chase while summoning other officers to the area for backup,” Martinez said.
Other officers arrived at the scene and found the suspect.
“At that time, they gave him verbal commands to drop the firearm multiple times. He refused,” Martinez said. “It caused officers to discharge their duty weapons striking the suspect.”
He said the officers provided life-saving measures on the suspect but he was pronounced dead after medical personnel arrived at the scene. No officers were injured.
This is the first officer-involved shooting of 2024. Per department policy, the names of the shooters involved will be released within 48 hours and there will be a briefing with additional details on the shooting within 72 hours.
Sahara Avenue was closed for more than three hours while police investigated the shooting.
